It’s a pleasure to introduce our new Senior Estimator Tom Coggin as we explore his lifelong passion for construction, his take on the job role within the Shanco team, and his advice for those considering a similar position within the construction industry.

What attracted you to a career in construction?

I have been exposed to construction all my life, visiting my Grandad on building sites and working alongside my Dad and Uncle carrying out various building works from a young age. Ultimately, I enjoy seeing a project progress from an idea or a drawing on a piece of paper, to a finished structure.

What do you like most about your job / working with Shanco?

I enjoy the variety of projects Shanco is involved in. Whether it be prison works, care homes, 278 works or NHS projects, each one varies and has its own challenges. My colleagues here at Shanco are all happy to help one another, and from day one, I've been made to feel welcome and part of the team.

What are your main responsibilities as a Senior Estimator?

Reviewing new enquiries, carrying out site visits and measures to determine the extent of the works involved, as well as building relationships with new and existing customers. I also carry out take-offs from drawings, produce bills of quantities and price the works accordingly, taking into account outputs, programmes and other restrictions.

Can you describe the Shanco team in three words?

Welcoming. Driven. Teamwork.

What advice would you give others thinking of a similar role in construction?

Go for it. I have found the construction industry to be an industry where everyone is happy to help one another, and the more connections you have, the better.

What do you like doing when you're not at work?

I try to go to the gym 2/3 times a week. I play golf once or twice a week, and in summer I also enjoy paddle boarding. A few pints here and there goes without saying!
